Steinbrueck designed the house for the Northwest Modernist painter, Alden Mason. In his later years, Mason lived in rented quarters in the Locke Vista apartments in Ballard, Seattle, WA. In 2008, it had the reputation of being something of an artist's colony.
This minimalistic house reflected the shortages affecting the United States immediately after WW II; many new families were also formed at this time, and many lacked the money to build large houses; the Washington Chapter, American Institute of Architects, gave the Mason House an Honor Award in 1953;
