Overview

Arthur Loveless invested in a large 2.12-acre property on the east side of 56th Avenue South that overlooked Lake Washington on the east. On it, he built a large, four-bedroom, four-bath residence with about 1500 square feet on two floors. The house had an English Country flavor to it and featured extensive gardens on its southwest side. Loveless's dwelling also had Lake Washington frontage on which a dock had been erected.

Building History

Loveless designed this house for himself in 1925. He called his dwelling the "Hollyhock House," likely inspired by the flower, although Frank Lloyd Wright had also created a well-known "Hollyhock House" for petroleum heiress Aline Barnsdall (1882-1946) in East Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA, in 1921.

Between 1998 and 2003, the house's deed was in the name of William Burke Hutchinson. This was changed to his wife Charlotte H. Hutchinson and her heirs on 12/30/2003. The ownership name was again changed within the Hutchinson Family on 04/01/2011 and 07/18/2011. On 05/17/2013, the Hutchinsons sold the house to James and Jeni Brooke for $2.510,000. The Brookes sold it for $4,100,000 on 05/23/2020 to Malcolm Pearson and Deborah Lo. Building Notes

Architect's own house.

In 2024, the house contained four bedrooms, four baths and 3,860 square feet,1,600 on floor one, 1,500 on floor two and 760 in a finished basment. The house occupied a long, rectangular property, rare for 2024 in that it had not been subdivided, containing 92,290 square feet (2.12 acres). This lot extended from 56th Avenue east to the Lake Washington waterfront. Most neighboring residences had been subdivided twice or more, except that at 7144 56th Avenue South that also remained a single, intact property. (See King County Department of Assessment iMap Parcel Viewer, Parcel Data for Parcel #2624049089, accessed 04/15/2024.)

The house was composed of two main wings, a garage wing to the north and the main living wing to the south. The two wings were covered by gable roofs of varying heights, that on the south being taller. The south wing had a central. projecting cross-gable housing the main entrance. To its south, was a living room on the first floor and bedrooms above. The east facade also featured cross-gabled projections including a hipped roof room in the center (possibly an addition) and a projection off of the garage wing on the north side.

Alteration

A dock was rebuilt on the property in 2004. (See King County Department of Assessment iMap Parcel Viewer, Parcel Data for Parcel #2624049089, accessed 04/15/2024.)
