Building History
Seattle architect Hermann (often spelled "Herman,") Steinmann (1860-1905) has been ascribed as the architect of the Terry-Kittinger Building, although the building's completion date has been recorded variously. It was built for G.B. Kiitinger and B.L. Terry. Historian Dennis A. Andersen, has stated that the building dated from 1889-1890 (See Dennis A. Andersen, "Steinmann, Hermann," in Jeffrey Karl Ochsner, Shaping Seattle Architecture, [Seattle: University of Washington Press, 1994] p. 352.) Sally Woodbridge and Roger Montgomery, in their Guide to Architecture in Washington State, also indicated that Hermann Steinmann was the architect of the Terry-Kittinger Building c. 1890. (See Sally Woodbridge and Roger Montgomery, Guide to Architecture in Washington State, [Seattle: University of Washington Press, 1980], p. 114.) A University of Washington image carried a date of 1905. (See "Olympus Café and Terry-Kittinger Building, 1st Ave. and Washington St. S , ca. 1969,"
Building Notes
The building was notable for its arcaded facade, the spandrels covered with textured terra cotta tiles.
Alteration
This building lost its cornice, perhaps in the Earthquake of 1949, which damaged so many masonry commercial buildings in Pioneer Square.
