Providence Hospital was sited on the east side of 5th Avenue between Madison Street and Spring Street.

Building History

In her HistoryLink article, "Seattle's Providence Hospital moves to a new building on September 24, 1911," historian Mildred Tanner Andrews indicated that Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart (1823-1902), of the Sisters of Providence Order, designed the first portion of the hospital in 1876. The first Providence Hospital was erected for the Sisters of Charity of the House of Providence; architect Donald MacKay (b. 1846) designed the building in the Second Empire Style.

The Sisters of Charity vacated the site in 1911, and moved to a new structure on 17th Avenue, now known as the "Pill Hill" neighborhood;

Alteration

The hospital was erected incrementally, as money allowed; MacKay's full tripartite design was fully realized in the later 1880s.

Demolition

Providence Hospital #1 was demolished before 1939, after which Seattle's first United States Courthouse was built.
