Building History

The Los Angeles Sports Arena, erected on a plot in Exposition Park, opened on 07/04/1959 with a bantamweight boxing title fight between Jose Becerra and Alphonse Halimi; the building cost $7 million to erect and was publicly funded. It seated 16,021, with two luxury suites. The LA Memorial Sports Arena web site noted that it seated "over 15,000" in 2011. (See "Sports Arena History," accessed 05/10/2011.)

The following teams played here: Los Angeles Kings (NHL), 1967; Los Angeles Sharks (WHA), 1972-1974; Los Angeles Lakers (NBA), 1960-1967; Los Angeles Blades (WHL); Los Angeles Clippers (NBA), 1984-1999; the University of Southern California basketball team continued to play here in 2005.

Building Notes

In 1987-1988, the LA Sports Arena had a capacity for basketball of 15,310. It averaged 8,773 attendees per game during those years, the second-lowest in the NBA, just above the San Antonio Spurs at 8,464.
