The Congregational minister, Henry Durant, acted as Principal of this early California center for higher learning; at first, the College School existed in a rented space in a building at the corner of Fifth Street and Broadway; it evolved first into the College of California and, after merging with the state-run state-run Agricultural, Mining, and Mechanical Arts College on 3/23/1868, into the University of California, first located in Oakland; in 1873, the new University of California moved to a more spacious location in nearby Berkeley, where it has remained.
