Building History
Berkeley architect William Corlett (1918-2000) bought the 60 foot by 200 foot lot for $1,000 in 1949. He designed a 2,014 square-foot residence for himself, his wife, and two children, built for $10 per square foot. Alfred Hirshfield was the general contractor and the venerable engineer Walter Steilberg, the engineering consultant. O.M. Simonson acted the residence's mechanical engineer.
Aesthetically, it anticipated the stark shed-roofed redwood designs done by Charles Moore and Joseph Esherick in the 1960s.
