Building History

A public high school has served students in Palo Alto, CA, since 1898. This school complex, erected during World War I, celebrated its grand opening on 12/24/1918. The campus cost $225,000 to build. By 1918, Allison and Allison had designed a number of modern school buildings in California, making them a design leader in the field; the school board's selection of a Los Angeles firm, despite its qualifications, was controversial, as many thought this important commission should go to a local practitioner. The firm operated from 1910 until the advent of World War II, in 1942.

Alteration

Palo Alto architect Birge M. Clark designed new buildings for the Palo Alto High School campus in 1927. Bids for electrical light fixtures appeared in the Daily Palo Alto Times on 11/25/1927. (See "Notice to Contractors," Daily Palo Alto Times, 11/25/1927, p. 11.)
