Real estate developer Hobart Johnstone Whitley (1847–1931) platted the town of Corcoran, CA. Agriculture formed the basis for its early economy, with local farmers raising grain, cattle and sugar beets. This was an early industrial building in the city erected to process beets into sugar. Later, prisons would become a leading employer in the town.
