The Newport Bay Investment Company erected this beachfront pavilion to entice Los Angelenos to travel to vacation at Newport Beach; the Pacific Electric Company's Red Car line built its southern terminus at Newport Beach in 1906, allowing city dwellers to make the trip in one hour;
The Balboa Pavilion is a rare survivor of the large-scale beachfront recreation buildings common on the Southern California coast c. 1900-1910; it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, level of significance: State.
