Building History
The sugar beet was introduced as a crop in the United States in 1857. The beet's drought-resistence caused it to be widely culivated in CA. On some farms, sugar beets were planted between rows of citrus trees to maximize acreage-yield.
This sugar-beet processing plant was owned by the Chino Valley agricultural pioneer, Richard Gird (1836-1910); in 1881, Gird purchased the 47,000-acre Rancho del Chino, and six years later he sub-divided 24,000 acres of this land.
