Designed for the transplanted Indianan, William Steppe Collins (1863-1952), who made a fortune in oranges, oil, and real estate; he developed Balboa Island, originally called "Collins Island" in the 1900s-1930s; wealthy Southern Californians built second "getaway" houses at Balboa after 1907; his so-called "Collins Castle" was rented by the ill-fated comedian c. 1921;

The Collins House was torn down in 1953; Collins had died the year before; in its stead, eight new houses were erected;
