Overview
The Banning Family resided at this grand residence between 1864 and 1927, when it was purchased by the City of Los Angeles. It has become the Banning Residence Museum, maintained by the City of Los Angeles, Department of Recreation and Parks. It was made the 25th Historic-Cultural Monument in Los Angeles.
Building History
Phineas Banning (1830-1885), developer of the Port of San Pedro, CA, erected this 2-story house, originally containing 30 rooms, in Wilmington, CA, a city he also founded. The house now is called the Banning Residence Museum and has 23 rooms. It is set on twenty acres, called "Banning Park," which also contain gardens and three barns.
Building Notes
A rare example of the Greek Revival Style in Southern California, the Banning House, San Pedro, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, level of significance: Local.
