As a result of the prosperity brought by the advent of the citrus industry and the refrigerated railroad car, the Riverside Country Club laid out the first golf course in Southern California; this course supposedly occupied land that was near to the later University of California at Riverside, but its exact location is disputed; play at the course discontiued in 1896;
