Overview
This third, Neoclassical version of the Cliff House Restaurant was built by Adolph Sutro's daughter, Dr. Emma Merritt, during 1908-1909. Under the management of John Tait this version of the Cliff House opened on 07/01/1909.
Alteration
New owners Leo C. and George K. Whitney redesigned the Cliff House interior in 1937. They also added a new gift store, reputedly the largest in the world.
In 1950, the Neo-Classical Reid Brothers design was modernized and covered in redwood siding, giving the building a contemporary, coffee shop look. Initially stained a dark brown, this wood siding was repainted in a light color later.
