Overview

Located on the southeastern corner of South Rossmore Avenue and West 5th Street, this residence was designed by the noted Los Angeles architect Francis Pierpont Davis for his wife and daughters. He resided here for 32 years.

Building Notes

Architect Francis Pierpont Davis (1884-1953, who went by the name "Pierpont,") owned this extensive, Mediterranean Revival Style house with his wife, Gertrude Alberta Churchill (1890-1963). They raised two daughters, Gabriella and Althea, here. Pierpont resided here from 1921 until his death in 1953.

Building Notes

Architect's own house. The house formed a F-shape, with the straight side of the F facing the South Rossmore Avenue. The building contained a large main block, two stories in height, parallel to South Rossmore Avenue. The top of the F was a one-story wing parallel to West 5th Street. The dwelling, in 2018, was ringed by plantings, its front facade obscured by tall hedges; a large entry court led to a central bay that projected slightly, containing the main entry. This auto court was not in the Davis's original conception, nor were the tall hedges that shielded the front of the house from view. The Davis House was clad in stucco walls and topped by a red tile roof. The front doorway was trimmed with emphatic voussoirs in the manner of a rural Italian villa. The main block's first floor contained living and dining rooms and kitchen, while the upper floor contained bedrooms. On the main block's north end, off one bedroom, stood a huge flat-roofed porch. The rear yard contained a lap pool on the north and a formal, axial garden on the south.
