Building History

While the chapel was completed in 1825, it was not officially consecrated until 1836. The Russian-American Company discontinued operations at Fort Ross in 1839, and the firm sold the property, buildings and existing supplies to Captain John Sutter (1803-1880) two years later.

Building Notes

Fort Ross as a whole is listed as California State Historic Landmark #5.

Prior to 11/02/2020, PCAD erroneously indicated that the Fort Ross Chapel was a Greek Orthodox church. (Thank you to Steve Johnson for notifying the author of this mistake in an email 10/30/2020.)

Alteration

Rebuilt after the April 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, when the State of California purchased the property.

The chapel was destroyed by a fire on 10/05/1970, but was rebuilt in 1973-1974.
