Originally, Broadway was known as "Fort Street." The Los Angeles High School #1 site was later occupied by the Los Angeles County Court House.

Overview

The first public high school in Los Angeles stood on the top of "Poundcake Hill," and was visible from a wide distance initially. At a time the city was still a lawless and dangerous place, the new high school became a symbol of civilization for the growing city.

Building History

Los Angeles's first public high school was completed on the site of the Central Elementary School in 1873. Construction began 07/19/1872. It cost $20,000 to erect, and was used until the building was moved in 1887. The property was later occupied by the Los Angeles County Court House.
