Construction of the Aztec Bowl began in 1933 as a Works Projects Administration (WPA) project. At its height, the Aztec Bowl project employed 700 people who dug out the 10,000-seat stadium at a cost of $476,863. It opened in 1936. The Aztec football team played its last game here in 11/1966, before moving to the multi-purpose Jack Murphy Stadium for the 1967 season.

Placed on the National Register of Historic Places, added 1994, Structure #94000402; the Aztec Bowl was used for football games, commencement ceremonies and other events between 1936-1994.

Alterations in 1948 added 2,592 seats.
