The Greek Theatre hosted its first events in mid-May 1903. President Theodore Roosevelt, a personal friend of University of California President, Benjamin Ide Wheeler, addressed graduates during commencement activities on 05/14/1903.
Julia Morgan assisted John Galen Howard on the design of the Greek Theatre, and had perhaps more responsibility than simply assisting. In the words of Sara Holmes Boutelle, "Morgan worked with him [Howard] on the Hearst Memorial Mining Building and is said to have designed the campus's Greek Theatre." (See Sara Holmes Boutelle, "Julia Morgan," in Women in American Architecture: A Historic and Contemporary Perspective," [New York, NY: 1977], p.80.)
Architect, Ernest Born, undertook alterations on the facility in 1957.
