Schweinfurth (1864-1900); Morgan worked closely with William Randolph's mother and the wife of the Comstock Lode mining magnate George Hearst (1820-1891), Phoebe Apperson Hearst (1842-1919), who took possession of the property from her son and remodeled a country house to her liking; Morgan got acquainted with Phoebe Apperson Hearst in part through her mentor, the architect Bernard Maybeck (1862-1957); as Sara Boutelle has indicated, Morgan stayed with the Maybeck Family in Paris c. 1899 while she attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and Maybeck was promoting Phoebe Hearst's International Competition for a new UC Berkeley Campus Plan with French architects.
