Building Notes
The San Juan Capistrano site was recorded on the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and was given the number HABS CA-331, HABS CAL, 30-SAJUC, 1-1dr/2ph/2/pq/fr.
Alteration
A bell tower was added to the first adobe church in 1791; long used as a storehouse, the significance of this small church was re-discovered by Father John O'Sullivan in 1922; renovations began soon thereafter, as this was the only mission in which the Franciscan Father Junipero Serra (1713-1784) actually held services.
