The writer Edgar Rice Burroughs sub-divided some of the 550 acres that he had bought from Los Angeles Times Founder and Publisher, General Harrison Gray Otis, to form Tarzana, CA; he bought the entire acreage in 1919.

Burroughs owned a 550-acre ranch here back in the days when the rural area was known for its berry farms and chicken ranches. He purchased the land in 1919 from Gen. Harrison Gray Otis, who had his own claim to fame as the founder and publisher of the "Los Angeles Times."
