Operated during WW II, to house and entertain military personnel traveling in Los Angeles, CA; Anne "Mom" Lehr ran the operation; actors Bette Davis and John Garfield originated the idea of a canteen for soldiers in 1938; Jules Stein, of the Music Corporation of America, helped to raise money for the operation of the place; a former livery stable, the Canteen was located at 1451 Cahuenga Boulevard, off Sunset Boulevard; just prior to becoming the Canteen, it operated as a bar called the Old Barn;
