Leigh S. J. Hunt (1855-1933), publisher of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer newspaper, owned this house and barn c. 1889. A fire consumed Pioneer Square on 06/06/1889, destroying the office and printing press of Hunt's newspaper. Acting quickly, he moved his news office and printing plant to this house at Columbia Street and 4th Avenue.

The Hunt House was a two-story, cross-gabled dwelling, which may have been built in increments. One of the two front-facing gables had a window with a pointed Gothic arch, while the other was lit by trabeated windows. The gothic gable also had a steeper pitch than the other.
