Between 1909-1919, the Los Angeles and Mount Washington Railway ferried tourists to and from the Mount Washington Hotel located at the peak of Mount Washington. A rail terminal at the foot of the mountain was located at Avenue 43 and Marmion Way. The hotel closed in 1918. Furniture of the Mount Washington Hotel, including Stickley pieces, was auctioned from 50 rooms on 07/29/1918. Just after closure, the hotel functioned as a boys school. In 1925, the Self Realization Fellowship bought the hotel and operated its international headquarters there.
The Mission Revival Mount Washington Hotel stood five stories tall, and had many projecting porches to enable views of the surrounding Los Angeles Basin. It staged a number of tennis events at its courts.
