Building Notes

The Southern California Chapter of the American Institute of Architects awarded the architectural firm of Edelman and Zimmerman a design award for this school in 1925. The building had simplified Renaissance Revival styling, seen most clearly in its rusticated archway, cartouches, and entablature over the main entry. Unlike the thick-walled, load-bearing masonry buildings of the Renaissance with their relatively few, small windows, however, this building had a modern fenestration, made up of bands of steel sash lights. This emphasis on providing ample light for children was common in the 1920s, when health researchers touted the critical effects of sunshine for fighting disease and insuring proper growth. The admittance of light was never a problem in Los Angeles. Tel: 323.753.3175 (2004).
