Prior to being the Club Alabam, it was known as the Apex Club, and was owned by musician, Curtis Mosby; One of the premier venues for jazz in the Vernon-Central District of Los Angeles in the 1920s-1950s; it was located nearby to the segregated Dunbar Hotel, the first facility to cater to African-American travellers in Los Angeles; (there was also a Club Alabam lcoated in New York, NY at West 44th Street).
