Building History
The Elliott Bay Connections Greenway opened for users on 04/21/2026. As noted in an article in the Seattle Times: "The trail runs on the east side of Alaskan Way from near Pier 62 to Clay Street and replace old trolley tracks and sidewalks with new plant beds of trees, shrubs and perennials; lighting and benches; and space for walkers, runners, bikers and mores. The project comes courtesty of Elliott Bay Connections, a public-private partnership focuse on revitalizing public parks along the waterfront, though the space is owned by the city of Seattle. The greenway and its maintenance and landscaping are funded by private donations from Melinda French Gates, MacKenzie Scott, the Diller-Von Furstenberg Family Foundation and Expedia Group. A stretch of the new greenway opened Friday [04/17/2026] between Blanchard Street and Wall Street to accommodate the first cruise-day detour of the Alaska Way Safety project, the city said. The multiuse trail also serves as a bike detour during cruise sailings." (See Kai Uyehara, "Waterfront gets new muliuse trail for pedestrians, cyclists," Seattle Times, 04/21/2026, p. A7.)
According to an article by Ryan Packer published in The Urbanist.org: "The trail is a major element of $45 million in broader waterfront upgrades north of downtown that also includes a substantial overhaul of the Elliott Bay Trail in Myrtle Edwards Park, still under construction. Set to be completed before the FIFA Men's World Cup in June, those changes will come with a full overhaul of the separated walking and biking trails, new public artwork and landscaping, and an amenity building with a concession stand and public restrooms."
