Building History

The San Jose Hotel, managed by James G. Shepard, was one of two hotels (as opposed to rooming or boarding houses) listed in The San Francisco City Directory by Charles P. Kimball, September 1, 1850, (p. 134). Of this establishment, Kimball wrote, "2 doors from Clay Board and Lodging, per week $15,00; board without lodging, $12.00." The other hotel listed by Kimball was the Bush House at the corner of Clay and Pike Streets.
