Building History

In 1877, the Anglo-Californian Bank, Limited, operated at 422 California Street in San Francisco, CA. It advertised that it had capital stock of $6 million and a surplus of $150,000. The Seligman Family had a significant financial stake in the Anglo-Californian Bank.

At the time, it was the only Pacific Coast office of this bank that had offices and affiliated institutions all over the world. Correspondents and agents in 1877 were: J. and W. Seligman and Company of New York, NY; Seligman, Hellman and Company, New Orleans, LA; Massachusetts National Bank, Boston, MA; Seligman Freres et Cie, Paris, France; Seligman and Stettheimer in Frankfurt, Germany; Gebruder Meyer in Berlin, Germany; Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (for China and Japan); Chartered Mercantile Bank of India, London and China; and Bank of Australasia and Branches (Australia and New Zealand).

Managers of the branch were Frederick S. Low and Ignatz Steinhart, with P.N. Lilienthal serving as the cashier. (See Anglo-Californian Bank, Limited, advertisement, Langley's San Francisco Directory for the Year 1877, p. xi.)

In 1899, the Volume One the Sanborn-Perris Map Company's Insurance Maps of San Francisco, California, indicated that another British financial firm, the Liverpool and London and Globe Insurance Company, had its offices at 420-422 California Street in San Francisco. (See Volume One Insurance Maps San Francisco, California, (New York: Sanborn-Perris Map Company, 1899], Map #17.) As noted by the San Francisco Public Library.org, the Liverpool and London Insurance Company was the first foreign insurer to locate an office in San Francisco in 1853. It stated: "The Liverpool & London Insurance Company began United States operations in 1848, and opened San Francisco offices in 1853, making them the first foreign insurers to serve California. An 1864 merger with the Globe Insurance Company formed the Liverpool & London & Globe Insurance Company (LLG)." (See San Francisco Public Library.org, "Royal Indemnity Company Records of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and Fire 1892-1987 (Bulk 1901-1911), Collection #SFH 16," published 2007, accessed 08/20/2025.)
