Building History
This four-bedroom, four-bath residence, completed in 1915, reflected Berkeley, CA's "Simple Home" aesthetic, popular in the city since the 1890s. The redwood-clad, two-story residence occupied a 7,598-square-foot lot and contained a substantial 3,439 square feet. Its formal character was greatly simplified vis-à-vis the Queen Anne style, prevalent during the 1880s and 1890s, and also resisted that style's fondness for turned ornamentation and bright colors. Charles A. Keeler (1871-1937), the author of the book The Simple Homeand an outspoken architectural advocate in the city, advocated a muted, earth-toned aesthetic that enabled a residence to merge with its natural surroundings.
Alteration
The house's exterior has been much simplified since the early 1970s, with a number of balconies and a sleeping porch removed.
