Overview

Daniel M. Streissguth designed this residence for Leland and Grace Helander, completed in 1956. Helander resided in the North Beach neighborhood of Port Townsend in 1964. (See "PT news in brief," Peninsula Daily News, 08/14/1964, p. 5.)

Building History

Seattle architect Daniel M. Streissguth designed this residence for Earl Warren Helander (1907-1969), and his wife Grace Campbell Helander (1908-1987). they wed in 1929. In that year, he and his bride moved to Port Townsend where he bought the Port Townsend Lumber Company from Tony DeLeo. He owned this business until his death. (See "Earl W. Helander," Peninsula Daily News, 08/26/1969, p. 10.) In 1940, Earl also operated the Olympic Hardware and Furniture Store at 830 Water Street in Port Townsend, WA. The couple had two sons, Robert Earl (1930-2013) and Richard D. Helander (1935-2020).
