According to historian Jean Sherrard, the Central School #1, the first facility in the system developed by the Seattle School District, opened on 08/04/1870 "near Third and Madison." Building Notes

The Central School #1 had a two-story, wood-frame structure, its west end topped by a cross-gabled belltower.
