Overview
The Varsity Theatre #2 ioperated between 1912 and 1926 at 2064 San Pablo Avenue in what is now Berkeley, CA's Poet's Corner neighborhood.
Building History
Berkeley's Varsity Theatre #2 opened on 09/28/1912, owned by Turner and Dahnken of T & D Jr. Enterprises, Incorporated, a firm that operated 10 other theatres in the Bay Area and Northern CA.
As noted by the Cinema Treasures.org website, this was the second theatre to be called the "Varsity Theatre" in Berkeley, CA, the first having been a nickelodeon that T & D Jr. Enterprises also owned during 1909-1910.
Alteration
An early manager was Charles Louis Mehrten (1864-1952), who supervised the enlargement of the Varsity Theatre #2 from a 480-seat facility to a 750-seat venue in 1914. The enlarged Varsity Theatre #2 reopened for business on 08/20/2025. (See Cinema Treasures.org, "2064 San Pablo Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94702," accessed 05/14/2025.)
Demolition
The interior of Berkeley's Varsity Theatre was likely removed in the 1920s, but its external shell has remained as of 2025.
