Building History
Between at least 1926 and 1942, this well-known, local, meat maket operated at 340 University Avenue. The brothers George (1891-1966) and Walter J. Liddicoat (1883-1958) owned it at that time. (See R.L. Polk and Company's Palo Alto, California, City Directory, 1934, pp.159-160.) The Liddicoat Brothers were born in Pentewan, Cornwall, England, and George entered the US via Vancouver, BC, Canada, at Blaine, WA, on 10/15/1913. He became a naturalized US citizen on 06/07/1918. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation National Archives and Records Administration (Nara); Washington, D.C.; Naturalization Records of the U.s. District Court For the Western District of Washington, 1890-1957; Microfilm Roll: 127; Microfilm Serial: M1542, accessed 05/07/2025.) They apprenticed as butchers and came to CA where they purchased ranch acreage on Page Mill Road near La Honda, CA. In 1920, they lived as boarders with the Fischer family in Mayfield, CA, now a part of Palo Alto. The 1920 US Census indicated that Walter came to the US in 1905 and George in 1912, although this latter date was one year off. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1920; Census Place: Mayfield, Santa Clara, California; Roll: T625_146; Page: 2B; Enumeration District: 133, accessed 05/07/2025.) They opened their Palo Alto butcher shop in Downtown Palo Alto before 1926.
In later years, Liddicoat's was transformed into a food court, operated by independent contractors, who offered diverse ethnic cuisines.
