Overview

Environmental Concern, Incorporated, designed the Grollmus Residence, a 4,000-square-foot, two-story residence in Spokane's Rockwood neighborhood, completed in 1982. Its first occupants were Dr. John M. Grollmus and Judith Stieghorst. As was important at the time, the Grollmus House had a number of energy-saving features, including a passive solar greenhouse. Stylistically, its precise geometry resembled 1960s designs by the New York Five architects, including Charles Gwathmey and Michael Graves.

Building History

A physician, John Mark Grollmus (1939-2015), married a nurse, Judith Stieghorst, (born 1938 in Sheboygan, WI) on 08/20/1960, and together they had two children. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Washington State Archives; Olympia, Washington; Washington State Divorce Indexes, 1969-2014, accessed 03/25/2025.) Their marriage lasted until 06/01/1990, when both requested a divorce. (See Department of Health, Divorce Certificates, 1968-1999 - Grollmus - John - Judith, Department of Health, Divorce Certificates, Washington State Archives, Digital Archives, http://digitalarchives.wa.gov, accessed 03/25/2025.) It appears that neither party resided at this address past 1992. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. U.S., Index to Public Records, 1994-2019 [database on-line].
