Overview
This two-story, Italianate residence accommodated the influential lawyer William H. Chickering and his family between 1884 and 1910, at least. Chickering co-founded the Chickering and Gregory law firm in San Francisco, with Warren C. Gregory (1864-1927), also a resident of Alameda County (in Berkeley).
Building History
The San Francisco attorney William Henry Chickering (1849-1915) and his wife Caroline Amelia Chickering (1851-1931) and their five children resided at 970 16th Street in Oakland, CA, in 1884. (See Oakland, California, City Directory, 1884, p. 218.) The Chickerings continued to live at this address in 1910. They moved into this house sometime between 1882 and 1884.
In 1881, the Chickerings resided at 625 14th Street in Oakland. (See Oakland, California, City Directory, 1881, p. 164.)
