The building was made possible by the donations of Mr. and Mrs. William Lincoln Honnold; the Honnold Library was dedicated 10/23/1952.

Honnold and the nearby Seeley W. Mudd Library have been altered three times; a south wing was added in 1956; Mudd Library with its connecting bridge to Honnold was added in 9/1970; Maris Peika of Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill, Los Angeles, designed a New Library addition in 1987 between the existing Mudd and Honnold buildings; this SOM/LA addition contained a seven-tier book stack; the three complexes together totaled 353 feet in length;
