Overview
The Woodbury Building was a brick-faced, one-story commercial building containing various shops in Altadena's Downtown district. For many years, the Altadena Hardware Company was located in a main store space at 849 East Mariposa Street. The Woodbury Building burned in the extensive Eaton Fire of 01/2025, having just passed its centenary the previous year.
Building History
In 2024, the Woodbury Block had the following tenants: John Diehl State Farm Insurance Company office at 835 East Mariposa Street; the Wellema Hat Shop at 837 East Mariposa Street; Amara Kitchen at 839 East Mariposa Street; Steve's Bike Shop at 843 East Mariposa Street; and Altadena True Value Hardware at 849 East Mariposa Street. The hardware store took up two storefronts at the building’s east end.
The building's brick facade displayed numerous iron tie-rods used to reinforce it against earthquakes.
Demolition
The Woodbury Building was engulfed in one of the several serious fires in Los Angeles of 01/2025, fanned by extremely forceful Santa Ana winds.
