Building History

Seattle architect Hugo Osterman (1906-1996), a specialist in bank design, worked with the Fibre Federal Credit Union's progress and growth committee in mid-1970 on the design of a new banking building. An article in the Longview Daily News of 09/10/1970, reported news on the new Fibre Federal Credit Union building being planned for a site on Commerce Avenue: “The Fibre Federal Credit Union will construct this 13,000-square-foot building on the eight lots the credit union owns in the 800 block on Commerce Avenue. A preliminary budget of $450,000 has been approved for the 140 by 108-foot complex, with completion set for December 1971. Seattle architect Hugo Osterman has been employed to plan, design, and supervise the construction. He is now completing the design study and will start on the working drawings in early September. The production schedule calls for bids to be let in January 1971 and plans will call for 6,580 square feet of working space for the credit union with an additional 6.480 square feet for future growth. The portion for future growth will be leased out until needed. The first usage of the rental area by the credit union is expected in 1974-75.”

The article continued: "The new credit union building will offer safety deposit boxes, night depository, and a drive-up window with facilities for a future second window. Special features of the building will be a children’s area designed to entertain and educate the young members and a 1,200-square-foot vestibule for member displays and other civic uses. There will be parking for approximately 50 cars in the 120-by-200-foot parking area.” (See"Fibre Federal Credit Union plans reported,"Longview Daily News, 09/10/1970, p. 17.)

Building Notes

In 2024, the Fibre Federal Credit Union had three locations: the headquarters at 822 Commerce Avenue; a branch at 2121 32nd Avenue; and a branch at 800 Triangle Shopping Center.

Demolition

This low, one-story building has been replaced by a three-story headquarters at 822 Commerce Avenue.
