AKA: Ventura County, Public Works Department, Matilija Dam, Ventura County, CA

Structure Type: built works - infrastructure - transportation structures - dams

Designers: United States Army Corps of Engineers (firm)

Dates: constructed 1947

Building History

After World War II, the US Army Corps of Engineers dammed the Matilija Creek, one-half mile above its junction with the Ventura River, in 1947. The erection of this dam created the Matilija Reservoir, originally designed to contain 7,000 acre-feet of water. Because of the deposition of river sediments, the reservoir held on 500 acre-feet of water by 2003. (See "Report backs up removal of 'useless' dam," Los Angeles Times, 07/25/2004, p. 3, 19.)
