Building History
San Francisco architectural firm of Rockwell and Banwell designed this church for the Lafayette-Orinda United Presbyterian congregation in the mid-1960s. The prominent use of redwood and other wood aligned it with the Bay Region work of Joseph Esherick, Charles Moore and William Turnbull. The Lafayette church also owed a general debt to the Russian Orthodox Church at Fort Ross (built and rebuilt several times between 1836 and 1973), in its overall appearance.
Building Notes
The Lafayette-Orinda United Presbyterian Church won a Merit Award from the 29th National Conference on Religious Architecture held in Miami, FL, in late 04/1968. (See "Merit Award," Faith and Form, vol., 1, 07/1968, p. 12.)
