Building History
Architect John Galen Howard designed this residence for William Campbell Clark, who owned the Clark Thread Works in Newark, NJ, c. 1896. (See Sally B. Woodbridge, John Galen Howard and the University of California, The Design of a Great Public University Campus, [Berkeley: University of California Press, 2002], p. 179.) In 1899, W. Campbell Clark resided at 1010 Broad Street in Newark. (See Newark, New Jersey, City Directory, 1899, p. 339.) He was also listed as residing at this address in 1891, so it is not clear if this was the location of the Howard and Cauldwell house for Campbell or not. (See Newark, New Jersey, City Directory, 1891, p. 280.)
