Overview

San Francisco architect William H. Crim designed this French-influenced Pacific Heights townhouse for a wholesale paper and stationery merchant, Henry R. Williar, Jr., and his wife Genevieve Huntsman Williar in 1915.

Building History

The San Francisco architect Henry R. Crim, Jr., (1879-1930) designed this residence for Henry Rieman Williar, Jr., (born 09/28/1855 in Baltimore, MD-d. 01/04/1939 in San Francisco, CA) and his wife Genevieve Louise Huntsman (born 04/12/1868 in San Francisco, CA-d. 10/17/1961 in San Francisco, CA) in 1915. The San Francisco Examiner noted the house's imminent construction on 12/19/1915: “Architect William H. Crim, Jr., will shortly award a contract for the construction of a high class residence to be erected for Henry R. Williar on the north side of Vallejo Street, east of Divisadero. The dwelling will contain ten rooms. An estimated cost of $13,000 is placed on the work.” (See "Ford Plant Is To Have More Room," San Francisco Exmainer, Real Estate and Finance Section, 12/19/1915, p. 43.)

In 1930, Genevieve and Henry resided at 2668 Vallejo Street. In that year, their residence had an estimated value of $20,000, many times the national average. For this well-heeled Pacific Heights neighborhood nearby residences on Scott and Vallejo Streets had approximate values of between $11,000 to $75,000. (The 1930 US Census form incorrectly listed the Williar address as 2667 Vallejo.) The Crims lived here with a domestic worker, Augusta Johanson (born c. 1871 in Sweden). Henry passed away in 1939 and Genevieve resided in this house until her death in 1961 at the age of 93. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com.
