Building History

A Guide to Architecture in San Francisco & Northern California complied and written by David Gebhard, Roger Montgomery, Robert Winter, John Woodbridge and Sally Woodbridge, said of this residence at 1730 Spruce Street in Berkeley, CA: "A good example of the Prairie Style in local translation." (See David Gebhard, Roger Montgomery, Robert Winter, John Woodbridge and Sally Woodbridge, A Guide to Architecture in San Francisco & Northern California,[Salt Lake City: Peregrine-Smith, Incorporated, 1973], p. 254.) The Prairie Style, developed for Midwestern locales by Frank Lloyd Wright, Purcell and Elmslie and others, never found wide faovr on the Pacific Coast, although some notable examples do exist.
