Building History

Maude E. Cox (born c. 1870 in MO) passed away in 1928, but lived at 803 North Rexford Drive in Beverly Hills before her death. She had three daughters and a son, one of whom was Mrs. Walter R. Hilker. (See "Rites Set for Today," Los Angeles Times, 11/15/1928, pt. II, p. 12.) As noted in a Los Angeles Times list published in 1938, a man named Fred Hilker resided at 803 North Rexford Drive, likely related to Mrs. Hilker. (See "Three Perfect in FIlm Query," Los Angeles Times, 09/27/1938, part II, p. 2.)

In 1940, a 78-year-old widow, Emma J. Williams, (born 01/20/1862 in IL-d. 10/15/1945 in Los Angeles County, CA) resided at 803 North Rexford Drive along with a staff of household workers and one of their families. The domestic workers included a Euro-American nurse, Kathleen Bower (a widow, born c. 1905 in English-speaking Canada), an African-American maid Ann E. Lee (born c. 1904 in GA), and a Euro-American chaffeur, Walter J. Buerman, Jr., (born 05/20/1911 in OH-d. 06/26/1964 in Los Angeles County, CA), Buerman lived in this house with his wife Edna Amanda Wedel (born 01/17/1911 in OH-d. 08/23/1995 in Los Angeles, CA) and their infant daughter Susan Buerman (born c. 1939 in OH). Emma Williams had previously lived in Cincinnati, OH, in 1935. (It is possible that she knew the Buermans prior to moving to CA, as they both had lived in Hamilton County, OH, in 1930.) Emma rented the house in 1940, at a cost of $300 per month.
