Building History

The dentist Charles William Decker (1855-1932) resided at this house in 1926. (See R.L. Polk and Company's Palo Alto, California, City Directory, 1926, p. 75.) He likely moved here from a location at 510 Waverley Street in about 1923. He vacated the Waverley address so that a two-story office block could be built there, what became known as the "Decker Oak Building." (A large live oak also had stood on Decker's Waverley property that was cut down to clear space for the new commercial structure.) According to Palo Alto-Stanford Heritage.org, he had his Waverley Street house moved to a new site prior to construction of the Decker Oak Building, completed in 1925. The Santa Clara County Assessor indicated that the house at 811 Hamilton dated from 1923.

As documented in the 1930 US Census, Decker lived in this house with his daughter Ethel Decker Ney, her husband Bartholomew and their two sons Charles and Bartholomew, Jr. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1930; Census Place: Palo Alto, Santa Clara, California; Page: 8A; Enumeration District: 0018; FHL microfilm: 2339952, accessed 04/25/2024.)

In 2024, Decker's house has been enlarged to include 6 bedrooms and 7 baths, and occupied 0.34 acres of land.
