Building History

Architect Albert W. Cornellius developed a specialty in designing movie theatres during the 1910s and 1920s in towns throughout Northern CA. The Grand Theatre, constructed for John C. Droge, a German immigrant businessman, opened on 08/11/1923. Droge had a profound influence on the development of early Tracy, establishing several businesses, including the Bank of Tracy, and building a number of buildings in its central business district, including a store on the northwest corner of West 7th Street and North Central Avenue, the Shamrock Hotel (13 West 7th Street, 1906), American Hotel (719 North Central Avenue, 1909), and the Grand Theatre.
