Overview

Seattle architect Arthur L. Loveless designed a cluster of three large-scale residences in the Laurelhurst neighborhood between 1925 and 1928. They were located nearly adjacent to one another, at 3038, 3048 and 3054 East Laurelhurst Drive NE for the Grimshaw, Bergues and Lear families.

Building History

Arthur Lamont Loveless (1873-1971), a Beaux-Arts trained architect of often costly residences, designed this dwelling on a prime, Lake Washington-facing setting on 3038 East Laurelhurst Drive NE. He designed it for the William E. and Harriet Agnew Grimshaw (born c. 1883 in Tacoma, WA-d. 01/09/1953 in Seattle, WA), and it was finished by 1925. William Grimshaw (born 03/20/1881 in Minneapolis, MN-d. 05/07/1950 in Seattle, WA) worked in real estate investments, and had an office in Room #914 of the Securities Building in Downtown Seattle in 1926. (See Seattle, Washington, City Directory, 1926, p. 668.)

In 1930, the Grimshaws lived at this address with her parents, James I. Agnew (born 01/09/1855 in Sugar Creek, IA-d. 07/05.1935 in Portland, OR) and Amanda Whitmer (born 03/02/1856 in Sugar Creek, IA-d. 02/08/1938 in Seattle, WA). James and Amanda farmed in WA and OR, and he also worked as a building contractor. Amanda lived with Harriet and William until her death in 1938. The Grimshaw House had a value of about $30,000, according to the US Census, a figure in line with neighboring dwellings. Ten years later, the Grimshaws lived with a nephew, James Agnew Heslup (born 01/23/1920 in Payette, ID-d. 07/29/1947 in Pasadena, CA). At this time, the house's value had decreased to approximately $25,000, as per the US Census. The Grimshaws remained at this address in 04/1950, when the US Census was taken, although William would die on the 7th of May, 1950. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation National Archives at Washington, DC; Washington, D.C.; Seventeenth Census of the United States, 1950; Year: 1950; Census Place: Seattle, King, Washington; Roll: 827; Page: 15; Enumeration District: 40-192, accessed 04/08/2024.) Harriet passed away three years later.
